Frequently Asked Questions

What is a crane truck or HIAB truck?

A crane truck combines a transport truck with a mounted hydraulic crane, allowing the same vehicle to load, transport, unload and place freight. HIAB is a well-known loader-crane brand, while “picker truck” is another commonly used name for this type of vehicle.

What can Y2K’s crane trucks transport and lift?

Y2K’s crane trucks can transport and lift a wide range of freight, including:

  • Rooftop HVAC units
  • Generators and transformers
  • Machinery and industrial equipment
  • Lumber and building materials
  • Steel, rebar and fabricated metal
  • Stone, masonry and precast concrete products
  • Palletized freight
  • Office and storage containers
  • Oversized, overlength and irregularly shaped loads
  • Non-containerized freight travelling to or from ports and terminals

If your shipment is not listed, contact Y2K. Our dispatch team can review its specifications and determine whether it can be handled by our crane-truck fleet or coordinated through our freight-brokerage network.

Can Y2K load, transport, unload and place freight?

Yes. Y2K can load your freight at the pickup location, transport it and use the truck-mounted crane to unload and place it at the destination.

This provides one coordinated transportation service and can eliminate the need to arrange separate loading or unloading equipment. Final placement depends on the shipment, required reach, available crane capacity, site access and safe truck positioning.

How much can a crane truck lift and how far can it reach?

Y2K has crane-truck options offering:

  • A maximum boom reach of 100 feet
  • Lifting capacities of up to 48,000 pounds
  • Freight capacities of up to 120,000 pounds

These are maximum capabilities across Y2K’s available equipment. The actual lifting capacity at a particular reach depends on the selected truck, load weight, boom position, required placement and job-site conditions. Provide the shipment’s weight and dimensions, along with the required lifting height and horizontal placement distance, so our dispatch team can confirm the appropriate crane truck.

Can Y2K deliver HVAC units, generators and other heavy equipment?

Yes. Y2K can transport, lift and place rooftop HVAC units, generators, transformers, machinery and other heavy equipment at commercial properties, construction sites, industrial facilities and private residences.

Available equipment includes a 20,000-pound spreader bar, pallet forks and a 5,000-pound winch, depending on the shipment and job requirements.

What areas does Y2K’s crane-truck service cover?

Y2K regularly provides crane-truck, picker-truck and HIAB services across Vancouver, West Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Delta, the Tri-Cities, Surrey, Langley, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford and Chilliwack.

Service to Whistler, Squamish, Hope, Vancouver Island, the Okanagan and other destinations throughout British Columbia may also be arranged depending on the shipment, equipment and placement requirements. For longer-distance transportation within BC or across North America, Y2K can coordinate additional equipment and coverage through its freight-brokerage network.

Does Y2K offer urgent, after-hours and weekend crane-truck service?

Yes. Urgent, after-hours, weekend and hot-shot crane-truck services are available upon request and subject to truck and operator availability.

Booking in advance provides the best opportunity to secure the appropriate crane truck. However, customers with urgent requirements should still contact dispatch because Y2K will work to find an available solution. All HIAB jobs are subject to a four-hour minimum.

How do I get a crane-truck or freight transportation quote?

Call Y2K at 604-513-4810 or submit a quote request online. To help us prepare an accurate quote, provide:

  • A description of the freight
  • The exact weight and dimensions
  • Pickup and delivery addresses
  • The requested date and timing
  • The required lifting height and horizontal reach
  • Loading, unloading and placement requirements
